Job Involvement and Its Relationship with Organizational Commitment

A Field Study on a Sample of Secondary Schools under the Education and Training Monitoring Office in Janzour Municipality

Authors

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between work engagement and organizational commitment among secondary school teachers in the Janzour Education Directorate, Libya. It also sought to assess the levels of work engagement and organizational commitment, and to identify potential differences in work engagement based on gender and years of experience. A descriptive-correlational methodology was employed. The sample comprised 80 secondary school teachers selected randomly from the target population. Data were collected using two standardized instruments: the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) developed by Schaufeli & Bakker (2003) and the Organizational Commitment Questionnaire developed by Meyer & Allen (1991).

The findings revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between work engagement and organizational commitment among teachers (r = 0.48, p < 0.01). The overall levels of both work engagement and organizational commitment were found to be moderate. Furthermore, no statistically significant differences were observed in work engagement levels attributable to gender or years of teaching experience. Based on these results, the study provides a series of practical recommendations aimed at improving organizational climate, providing psychological and administrative support, and developing training programs to enhance teachers' engagement and commitment.
